There are few things more positive than a bright, healthy, and confident smile. For many, a healthy smile gives and projects a sense of confidence and well-being. The old saying, “the eyes are the windows to the soul,” may be true, but there’s an increasing number of studies that are showing the mouth to be the gateway to health.(1)Eating a proper diet is part of it, but having proper oral hygiene is also a powerful way to improve your health.
The mouth is the gateway to health
Poor oral health can mean poor overall health. Remember the mouth, is full of bacteria. Bacteria itself isn’t bad, but when it begins to build up to dangerous levels, the body has to fight back. Bacteria can cause systemic inflammation that causes harm to the body. Several studies have shown the connection between poor oral hygiene and serious and chronic diseases(2)including:
Cardiovascular disease
Alzheimer’s disease
Diabetes
Cancer
Obesity
Keeping your mouth healthy
The first step for good oral health is brushing your teeth. The ideal is to brush twice a day, in the morning and at night before going to bed. A soft bristle brush is the best. Soft bristles are gentler on the gum tissue as well as the tooth enamel itself, both of which can be damaged by stiff bristles and over-vigorous brushing. Also, softer bristles can reach areas of your teeth that hard, less pliable bristles can reach.
“When you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, swishing and swallowing water can help dislodge food particles and neutralize acids in your mouth. But brushing alone won’t keep your mouth clean. You also must floss. Flossing gets areas between the teeth where food debris can build up, leading to an increase in bacteria. This build-up of bacteria is what can cause bad breath, periodontal disease,tooth decay and loss. This simple step can help prevent bacteria buildup and reduce the risk of cavities.
Prioritize eating fresh fruits and vegetables
According to Dr. Fisher, “A balanced diet, rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, provides essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that support good oral health. These foods help strengthen your teeth and gums, promote saliva production (which aids in neutralizing acids and washing away food particles), and reduce the risk of gum disease. Aim to include a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet for optimal oral health benefits.”
Get regular exams
Your dentist is your best ally for good oral health and good overall health. It’s always good to see your dentist every six months.During these visits, your dentist can thoroughly clean your teeth, removing plaque or tartar buildup. They will also examine your mouth for signs of dental problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer. Early detection of these issues allows for prompt treatment and prevention of further complications.
Cut back on sugar
Consuming too much sugar is terrible for the body in general and especially for the teeth. Excessive sugar can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar and produce acids that erode tooth enamel, leading to deterioration. Reducing your sugar intake can significantly lower the risk of dental problems. Reduce your consumption of processed foods and beverages, as they have large amounts of hidden sugars. Remember to choose water over sugary beverages, as they can contribute to tooth decay.
Look at your mouth – not just your smile
Again, the eyes can and do tell a lot about health, but so does the condition of the mouth.
“Self-examination is integral to oral health care. By examining your mouth regularly, you can identify any changes or abnormalities requiring attention. Look for inflammation, bleeding, sores, or other unusual symptoms. If you notice anything unusual, consult your dentist or healthcare provider immediately,” explains Dr. Fisher.
