A Healthy Community Helps Make a Healthy You

Our approach to "Community" emphasizes the importance of cultivating meaningful connections that nurture both individual growth and collective harmony.

At the time of this writing, it’s summer. Schools are out, the weather is warm, and most people are in vacation mode. Festivals and other outdoor events are plentiful; the pace of things tends to slow down a bit, and people are in a mode of getting together and having fun. Why? It’s not just the great weather, but the community interaction.

We are inherently, social beings!

For the Village of Peace – both in Dimona and in ourInternational Jurisdictions, one of our core values is the concept of collective/communal living, or as we have dubbed it, “The Whole.” In fact, two of the Seven Pillars that the village is founded on are “Family Pride, Unity, Structure and Expansion,” and “All Things in Common.”

The power and protection of “The Whole”

The Whole simply speaks to an intentional pursuit of a lifestyle where we strive to stay healthily connected. We support those things determined as life-giving and life-sustaining, and actively support one another in the pursuit of those things. This ideal comes from one of our most treasured spiritual principles, “…it is not good for man/woman to be alone.”

Our approach to “People-to-People Ecology” emphasizes the importance of cultivating meaningful connections that nurture both individual growth and collective harmony. This holistic framework ensures that every member of our community engages in daily interactions that foster empathy, understanding, and collaboration. By prioritizing these social bonds, we create an environment where everyone feels supported and inspired, leading to increased emotional resilience and a deeper sense of belonging.

In practice, this means facilitating opportunities for communal activities, shared learning experiences, and collaborative projects that bring people together across generations. Whether it’s through group exercises, cultural events, or community discussions, our goal is to build a network of support that enhances mental, emotional, and spiritual health. These interactions are not just beneficial in the present; they lay the groundwork for a future where individuals thrive in a close-knit, compassionate society.

By embedding social connectivity into the fabric of our daily lives, we ensure that our community remains vibrant and dynamic. This commitment to nurturing relationships is essential. It contributes not just to our current well-being but also tolongevityand a higher quality of life. As we continue to evolve and adapt, our “People-to-People Ecology” remains a cornerstone of our community’s success, demonstrating the power of unity and shared purpose in creating a fulfilling and enriched life for all.

We DO need one another

We aren’t the only ones who realize that healthy social connections are essential. Again, we are, by design, social creatures. We need one another. Several studies have shown that for human beings to be healthy and vital, particularly as they age, they have to connect to and be a part of positivesocial groups.

Even in our jurisdictions where we may not reside in close physical proximity, we prioritize coming together to remain updated and relevant in each other’s lives.

Last week, as of this writing, our Dimona Village celebrated “Unity Week,” a series of events that highlighted fun, creativity, and the significance we hold in each other’s lives, regardless of our age. We celebrated every facet of our culture by showcasing our distinctive cuisine, attire, artistic expressions, and vibrant sports competitions – all essential elements to Mastering the Art of Living.

Healthy interaction is built into our culture

Healthy social interaction emphasizes positivity, respect, support and adherence to some agreed upon rules or standards designed to encourage us togrow.Belonging to a group that shares a healthy set of values and customs that mimic yours makes you feel supported, heard andprotected.

In earlier posts we have talked about some of our other core tenets:

Holistic preventive health and wellness for example and the various social and cultural practices we have developed.

Our plant-based diet is enhanced by our communal lifestyle, which features shared dining and food preparation at different intervals, along with a restaurant in the Village that offers nutritious meals for community members, visiting guests, and our friends in the broader Israeli community.Eating collectively, can be a powerful bonding experience.

Our National Sewing Center, where members of the community can come together individually as well as in groups to make natural clothing and other items for the home. Working collaboratively, particularly in a creative space, helps to boost creativity.

These activities, sometimes arranged as structured classes, help us maintain our commitment to a consistent workout routine of at least three times a week, enhancing our quest for longevity and vitality.

Culturally relevant group exercise programs that provide a fun and healthful outlet not just for our young people but also catering to our beloved seniors or“National Treasures.”

Studies have shown the importance of exercise, how it causes the body to release the “feel good” hormones, dopamine and serotonin. Group interactions are also linked to dopamine, serotonin, and the release of oxytocin, another powerful feel-good hormone. These have been shown to positively impact the brain’s functions as we age/mature. Most people, when working out collectively, report that they feel inspired to push themselves more.Endorphinsare released, giving one a greater capacity for exercising and feeling a deeper sense of accomplishment, being attached to a group with a similar goal.

A social calendar brimming with shared expressions of growth, unity, respect, and recognition of a power greater than ourselves.

A healthy and fulfilling lifestyle isn’t complete without being part of people who want and share the same goals. Being in community with others who truly have your best interests in mind helps us bolster a positive outlook and self-esteem. It can also give us the tools needed to address and combat stress, negativity, loneliness, fear, and doubt.

Facing life’s challenges, knowing you’re not alone is critical for our joy and longevity.

Are you part of a community, be it a neighborhood social group, a sports club, a faith organization, or an interest-based association? We would be thrilled to hear your thoughts!

You can also become a member of the Village of Peace online community, participate in our local Jurisdiction community events, or even launch your own initiatives!
